Talk About the Ascent...

Long, vertical lines began to appear early in the stages of this painting. They reminded me of climbing a ladder…going up…it wasn't long before I knew the title of this painting before it was completed. Meet, “Ascent”:

I have a best practice in which I take a lot of pictures of the painting as it changes. I carry the pictures in my phone with me where ever I go and I refer to the piece throughout the day so I can see my progress and make mental notes about where I want to go the next time I sit with the painting.

I think it’s so educational to see the progression shots that lead up to the completed painting. Not only can you see your progress, you can learn mistakes too! I think this is a great idea if you get stuck while painting, and I recommend this process to all of my students.

A common mistake I see from frustrated students is that they sit down for a day of painting and expect to come out of the day with a handful of gallery ready paintings. I think that taking the progression shots and stepping back to study your work is so helpful..it’s the best way to make you slow down and absorb the process.

I have a similar painting to Ascent featured as a class sample in my “Expressionism Vol 2” online workshop. If you want to learn complex paint layering, glazing and mark making, I invite you to click here and take a look at the promo video at the bottom of the listing. If you sign up for “Expressionism, Vol 2”, class access is immediate! You’ll get about 6 hours of awesome, edited video footage..plus access to our private Facebook Group where I check on you daily and post fun extras for all of the students.
