How Good are You with Color?

The absolute first online workshop that I wrote with Chris Cozen was about color. That workshop is still the first workshop I always recommend to beginning artists when they say they want to learn how to paint. In that workshop we teach the relationships between colors and how to apply them into your art. We touch on composition with color and even some of the special effect paints. The workshops initially were devised so that artists could understand how to properly utilize all of the glorious supplies (and let’s be honest..they are not cheap!) that we have come to know and love. Better use = better performance, better art!

Recently, Golden paint introduced a few new colors that are awesome to work with. Titan Mars Pale, Titan Green Pale and Titan Violet pale were immediate additions to my practice. Recently, I made a color chart to test mixing the new colors with some of my favorite colors.

The process of creating these mixing charts is only one small part of the Color:Beyond the Basics online workshop. I find this work highly meditative…and when my abstract painting brain is not clear, the process of mixing new colors in swatches like this very calming.

Try some color mixing! The swatches you paint can help you get out of a color block situation the next time you paint…and they sure are neat to look through.
