Looking Through the Trees

I don’t consider myself someone who is eloquent…and I am terrible at writing captivating content, especially when it comes to describing my paintings. I think this is because my paintings often convey my feelings.. a specific energy, that is often difficult to describe.

As I get older, I am working very hard to clearly express myself. I am speaking more slowly and thinking about my choice of words. I can’t help but wonder if I feel more strongly about my visual language because it is much more comfortable to me.

“Through the Trees”, original abstract painting by Julie Prichard. Tap the image for more info.

When I paint, I paint with a color palette in mind, but the shapes that emerge in each painting are always organic. I never know what I am going to “get” initially, but as the shapes come forward, I know how to develop them. This painting almost immediately reminded me of light filtering through tall trees. It has been windy here in San Diego, where I live, and I think the light filtering in through my windows also played a role in developing the feelings that arose as I painted this piece.

“Through the Trees”, by artist, Julie Prichard.

I recently sold a similar painting, “Wonderland”. Wonderland was hanging in my studio for a few months and when it sold, I felt like I needed those luscious greens back on my studio wall.. So- “Through the Trees” will hang here until it soon finds its permanent home too.

Ten years ago, I would not have been able to recreate a similar palette on a new painting.. Ten years ago, I would have been painting with 15 different tubes of paint, mixing and layering without really thinking about what I was doing. Fast forward to today, and I have all of the paintings I have created in the last year recorded in my journal..my feelings as well as my process, and I am able to re-mix the same colors. You can see though, the shapes are organic.

I can’t stress enough how easy it is to mix and layer such a beautiful palette. My “Expanding on Color” online workshop is so great- not because I wrote it…haha…great because I painted this with 3 colors and two add-ins. I didn’t waste paint mixing greens that did not harmonize with each other..and the recording process was so easy in helping me replicate “Wonderland”. I’ll never stop painting this way.

If you’d like to learn my process, please click here to view the workshop. It’s not another color mixing workshop…it’s a layering, glazing, composition, product knowledge, money-saving, daily coaching included andso-much-more online workshop. Trust me. 😉
